Old Wrinkly, who thinks this is all his fault for interfering with fate and setting the quests, helps Hiccup realise he has to return the Fire Stone to the volcano. Alvin had decided to stay and train the Exterminators to serve him as their leader and asked Humungous to fulfil his promise of a favour and kill Hiccup. Stoick had later successfully retrieved the Fire Stone, but it kept the volcano dormant, and its removal had started the events leading to its imminent eruption. He then reveals his love was Valhallarama, Hiccup's mother. He befriended a prison guard soon revealed to be Alvin the Treacherous, and asked him to take the necklace and message back to his love in exchange for a favour – but Alvin returned 15 years later pretending she didn’t care about Humungous anymore due to his failure. His Love gave him half of her ruby-heart necklace, promising to rescue him if he ever sent it to her (she was a great Quester), but he was captured and his hunting dragon killed. Long ago, he fell in love with a woman but her disapproving father sent him on a quest to retrieve the Fire Stone from Lava-Lout Island. He advises them to leave the Archipelago until he realises he is on Berk and in Hiccup’s presence, at which point he agrees to be hired as Hiccup’s Bodyguard – he turns out to be very competent, even teaching Hiccup sword-fighting techniques, and saves his life multiple times – however he soon reveals that he actually was the one behind the assassination attempts, but couldn’t go through with it as he liked Hiccup. He had actually been captured by Lava-Louts (enemies of the Hooligans, from whom Humungous had managed to steal his fireproof suit) and forced to work in a prison-forge for them for 15 years, until he escaped during an evacuation due to the island’s volcano being about to erupt, providing necessary conditions for around a million Exterminators to hatch, baby versions of whom had attacked them on the hillside. He is revealed to be Humongously Hotshot, a great Viking Hero who everyone thought had died years ago.

Gobber’s riding dragon, Goliath, carries out everyone but Gobber and Hiccup before being killed, but they are then rescued by a mysterious warrior on a White Dragon with the help of his fireproof cloak. Hiccup begins the lesson on his Windwalker, a weak riding dragon with a limp who he picked out of sympathy despite having first pick, but they are suddenly trapped in a ring of fire by 6 unknown black dragons. Gobber decides to take the boys in the Hooligan Pirate Training Program on a Herding-Reindeer-on-Dragonback lesson, on a hillside Hiccup noticed was burnt by fire. Shocked and confused, Belle and the Beast must work together to unravel a dark mystery about their families that is twenty-one years in the making. When an unexpected heat wave hits Berk, Old Wrinkly predicts it is an Omen of Doom that a new dragon will rain down fire and destruction, but his words are unheeded due to a poor track record of soothsaying. Stranger still, she sees that her mother is none other than the beautiful Enchantress who cursed the Beast, his castle, and all it's inhabitants. But when Belle touches the Beast's enchanted rose, intriguing images flood her mind - images of the mother she believed she would never see again. Belle also happens to be the captive of a terrifying, angry beast. She wants to explore the world, despite her father's reluctance to leave their little cottage in case Belle's mother returns - a mother she barely remembers.

She longs to escape her poor provincial town for good.

Belle is a lot of things: smart, resourceful, restless. What if Belle's mother cursed the Beast? As Old as Time is the third book in a new YA line that reimagines classic Disney stories in surprising new ways.
